NEW BRD AVAILABLE FOR COMMERCIAL SHRIMPERS

After years of development a new BRD is available for commercial shrimpers. The Cylinder BRD has passed federal, field certification trials and is now being tested on commercial shrimp boats ahead of it being administratively certified. Testing by commercial shrimpers will allow scientists to gauge its’ acceptability by the industry. The device provides excellent shrimp retention (about 98%) and bycatch reduction of about 43%. The new device provides an area of slow flow that attracts fish (but not shrimp). When fish move into the slow flow area, they are then encouraged, by crowding of other fish, to move out of the trawl. We found that the device actually works better on juvenile red snapper than it does on fish in general obtaining greater than 50% juvenile red snapper bycatch reduction in some cases.

                             Bycatch Reduction Device Testing Agreement

We are deeply appreciative of your willingness to provide feedback on the new bycatch reduction device you have been provided. Thanks to commercial fishermen and women like yourself, scientists are able to better meet the needs of the commercial industry and, at the same time, gauge the acceptability of new fishing technology.
The device you are testing will greatly reduce fish bycatch and has very little shrimp loss. However, it is important for us to receive feedback regarding its real-world application. Toward that end, we request that you use this device for a minimum of 30 drags before filling out the attached questionnaire. However, if you find the device completely inappropriate after only a few drags and feel that continued use would not change your assessment, then please contact us (bygrp@olemiss.edu, 662 915 7479) so that we can pick up the device and place it on another vessel.
As incentive to try the device, a $250* honorarium be paid to those that use the device for the minimum number of trawls and return the completed the questionnaire**. Additionally, for those that find the new BRD worthwhile, you may keep the BRD and continue using it
IF YOU ARE SHRIMPING IN WATERS WHERE A BRD IS NOT REQUIRED BY LAW.  For those shrimpers working in WATERS WHERE A BRD IS REQUIRED BY LAW, the BRD cannot be used beyond the date of your NMFS Letter of Authorization. However, you may keep the BRD until such time as the device may be administratively certified.

*Please note that the honorarium is only available as long as funds last.
**The questionnaire below can be filled out and emailed to bygrp@olemiss.edu. Additionally, the information can also be phoned in to Glenn Parsons, 662 915 7479 office, 662 234 3901 home, 662 371 5372 cell.
